If you’re considering downsizing and moving into a tiny home, there are a few things to keep in mind. If possible, I would advise replacing the furniture you currently have in your standard-sized home. Furniture with multiple purposes is a great space-saving trick. Ottomans that serve as coffee tables and have storage, pull-out sofa beds for guests, foldable tables, or even doing away with a table altogether & utilising the kitchen island that we offer in our Santana, Belmont, and Brooklyn designs. Choose to spend a little extra in your spare bedroom and put in a Murphy bed that can fold up when not in use, so you have a room with more than one purpose.

When considering new furniture for your tiny home, it’s also important to think about pieces with clean lines to avoid feeling overcrowded. Low & smaller proportioned pieces will also help your ceiling feel higher. Choosing armchairs that are smaller in size & that can swivel are also great for functionality in a small space.

When designing your tiny home, get creative & choose to invest wisely. Integrating as much as possible is a great place to spend more. Hiding appliances will make the space feel bigger. Integrated dishwashers, microwaves in pantry cabinets, washing machines, and dryers behind cabinetry will all help create a more spacious and less crowded feel. Installing toe kick drawers in Kitchen & Laundry joinery for extra storage is another great way to add extra storage in an otherwise wasted space.

Just because you’ve chosen to live small doesn’t mean your home has to be boring or lacking in personality. Small spaces force you to live with less, declutter, and embrace simplicity. In fact, less is more in a small space – you can make it cosy without feeling claustrophobic. Add personality to your furnishings with cushions, blankets, artwork, and bedding.

Another space to consider is your outdoor area. If you’re choosing to deck the front of your home, it’s a great opportunity to extend your living space outdoors. New Zealand summers make for great indoor/outdoor living, and adding a pergola or covered area is even better to make the most of the year.
